How can you Improve your Quran Recitation

Many of us have grown up listening to the beautiful recitation of the Quran. And you may feel that you can never reach the level of excellence that we here from these amazing reciters.

On my tajweed journey I learnt we all have a unique and beautiful recitation voice. What do you do if you want recite Quran with your beautiful recitation voice? To fulfil your goal you will have to put in the effort to learn tajweed and apply it when reciting Quran.

In this blog post we will explore 5 practical tips that can help you on your journey to recite Quran beautifully.

1.    Find yourself a Quran teacher

Before learning tajweed with a teacher, I had no idea I was making major mistakes that would change the meaning of a word. Therefore it is very important for someone to listen to your recitation. Without a teacher it is difficult to understand how to pronounce the letters correctly and how to apply the tajweed rules. You might think you are reading correctly but teacher will be able to point out your mistakes and weaknesses and help you correct your mistakes.

2.   Be consistent

I have definitely noticed with my students that consistency is a key part of the journey. We recently a break for a month before coming back to our Quran lessons. The first lesson back they found it difficult to read fluently and to identify the rules of tajweed.

3.     Take it slow

Often people hear the word tajweed and they become overwhelmed. I was definitely one of them. As a child when I was learning tajweed, being taught many of the rules at once meant I didn’t learn anything.

But when I was learning tajweed as an adult our teacher started from the very basic principles of tajweed. In our class we focused on one rule at a time until we understood it and were able to apply it before moving on to the next rule.

Taking the same approach as we did and learning one rule at a time help you set a strong foundation for the rules and stop you feeling overwhelmed with the terminology and the rules, inshaAllah.

4.      Find yourself an accountability partner

In our class we were assigned an accountability partner to check over our homework. This was a gamechanger for many of us, as it meant we were motivated to complete the homework and to stay on track. If we did not complete our homework we would be letting down the other person.

It is also wonderful to share your journey with someone who is part of your success and failures. When you celebrate your success together it makes it extra special and it will be something you will look back on fondly.

5.  Teach what you learn to others

Find someone in your family like your mum, dad, spouse, children or siblings to teach what you are learning. When you teach someone else you will find you understand the rule better.

There is also a hadith narrated by narrated `Uthman, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Quran and teach it."

(Sahih al-Bukhari 5027)

So why not be among the best and teach the Quran to one person in your family.
